This months first spotlight volunteer is Matt Strickland, from L3 Communications.
Matt earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Safety & Health from Columbia Southern University in 2013. He is also a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), a Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS).
Matt is a certified ESD Level I Plant Auditor and has completed all training requirements for ESDA Program Manager and will sit for the exam at the 2015 symposium.
Matt has been with L-3 for a total of 16 years, 11 of those with L-3 TW. As Facilities Manager, his main duty includes coordinating long/short term facility projects utilizing L-3 TW resources and contract labor. He is also a member of the L-3 TW Workplace Violence Assessment team, Energy Conservation team, and is chair of the Business Continuity Plan (BCP) team. He is directly responsible for managing the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), Foreign Object Debris (FOD) and Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) programs for the division. Matt is also a robust resource for the corporation as he leads two L-3 resource teams for FOD/ESD.
Matt retired from the Navy in 1995. When not working, Matt is busy with hobbies and family including: playing golf and watching college football (University of Alabama is his favorite team). He also enjoys shooting black powder muzzleloader guns and participating in 1840’s living history re-enactments of the fur trading era.
He volunteers for the Teen Challenge of Southern California organization - a drug and alcohol rehab organization - as an advisory board member and student counselor.
Matt just celebrated his 30th wedding anniversary with his wife, 2 daughters, and 3 grandchildren.
Matt became a member of the ESDA in 2007. There are no local chapters in the San Diego area but he is considering starting one (if you are from that area and interested please contact him).
Having attended every symposium since joining, Matt has been an active member of the Symposium arrangements committee, a tutorial monitor, and he recently joined the Education committee.
Matt is also involved in several standards Working groups such as: WG 3, WG 15, WG 19, WG 23, WG 53, and STDCOM
Being a volunteer with the ESDA has contributed Matt’s professional and personal growth; "I like interacting with people across various industries that have the need for ESD controls and learning from the vast resources and knowledge base." L3 management is dedicated to continuous improvement in all their processes and being involved with the ESDA has a positive impact in helping the Company reach its continuous improvement goals, especially in the area of ESD controls. "The time I have spent with the ESDA and its membership, has given me a better perspective on ESD issues and how various companies address those issues. I have also been able to establish a great network of resources among the membership that are readily available to assist with any ESD related question I may have."
