Sandia National LaboratoriesCertified 2005Doug Miller received an M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of New Mexico in 1994 and a B.S. degree in Engineering Physics from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1982. During this time, he earned Alpha Phi Sigma and Sigma Pi Sigma Scholastic Membership.
From ‘85 to ‘91, he was employed by defense contractors BDM Corporation, BDMMSC, and UIE. During this time, he was fully engaged in strategic defense initiative projects, small business innovative research prototype development, electrical overstress analysis of weapon systems, and operation, maintenance, and testing of weapon systems.
In 1993, he joined the Pantex Plant work force as an employee for Battelle Memorial Institute, where he was responsible for developing and disseminating electrical safety policy, and evaluation of facilities, equipment, testers, and manufacturing processes in nuclear explosive safety areas. He developed and provided demonstrations to customers, as well, as training classes for engineers and technicians. He was a technical advisor to national study groups and management. Since working at the Pantex Plant, he has been awarded the Defense Programs Award of Excellence, the Pantex Scientific Advancement Award, and twice awarded the Pantex Key Contributor Award.
In 2001, he transitioned to BWXT Pantex as a Section Engineer, where he provided technical and management leadership for the nuclear explosive electrical safety program at Pantex. He mentored and managed Pantex electrical engineers on the art of nuclear weapon electrical safety. He provided policy interpretation, management system design and implementation, guidance to engineers and technicians, customer service, and informational briefings. He was a qualified voting nuclear explosive safety study group member. Also, he was an advisor or member in numerous nuclear explosive safety studies and DOE explosive safety committee meetings. He was a subject matter expert for nuclear explosive safety study groups, explosive safety committees, defense nuclear safety facility boards, and the DOE. He created, produced, and managed computer modeling, analysis, and approvals for electrical concerns in Nuclear Explosive Areas.
In 2004, he became a technical staff member for Sandia National Laboratories located at the Pantex Tri-Laboratory Office. There he functions as a quality engineer for nuclear weapons manufacturing, surveillance, assembly of flight test units, assembly of laboratory test units, and laboratory testing of test units for all of the nuclear weapons programs. Mr. Miller serves as a qualified voting nuclear explosive safety study group member and electrostatic discharge control management expert advisor for nuclear explosive safety studies.
Outside of work he enjoys supporting and working with grade school and high school children in sports, religion, and arts. Doug and his wife, Julie, have been married for 20 years and have four children, one in high school and three in grade school.
