Recent reports highlight that AI capabilities are accelerating at an unprecedented pace, with some systems now matching or exceeding human performance in specialized tasks such as coding and advanced problem-solving. Adoption of the technology is increasingly widespread. Surveys indicate that nearly nine out of ten organizations now use AI in at least one business function, reflecting how deeply embedded the technology has become in modern operations. As technologists, many of us have an up-front seat, watching this exponential development of AI and participating in its expansion. Much of what we are doing within the ESD Association focuses on enabling 2.5/3D integration. 3D integration of leading-edge technology chiplets is one of the critical innovations enabling the rush into the brave new world of artificial intelligence. Without it, neither the large microprocessors necessary for high-power computing nor the high-bandwidth memories required for large data would be possible. While the Jensen Huangs, Sundar Pichais, and Satya Nadellas of the world want us to embrace the huge upsides of this new “defining technology”, if one peers behind the curtain, AI is certainly not without its risks. Yes, AI is driving measurable productivity gains and economic value across industries. Businesses report that AI helps increase revenue, reduce costs, and automate repetitive tasks, enabling employees to focus on higher-value work. Some estimates suggest that generative AI alone could contribute between $2.6 trillion and $4.4 trillion in annual economic value globally, largely through improvements in customer operations, marketing, and research and development. At a macroeconomic level, AI is expected to boost economic growth; for example, the International Monetary Fund has suggested it could raise global GDP by around 0.8% over the coming years. In fields like healthcare, education, and scientific research, it can accelerate discovery and improve decision-making. AI tools can assist doctors with diagnostics, help students personalize learning, and enable researchers to process massive datasets far more efficiently than before.

But the realized benefits are certainly not universal. While one of the benefits of AI is increased worker productivity, a main concern is that it is negatively affecting the job market, particularly for entry-level positions. In 2025, AI was cited as a factor in roughly 55,000 job cuts in the United States. Anxiety among workers over job loss has risen sharply, from 28% in 2024 to 40% in 2026. This is negatively impacting how society views AI. Where state and local governments were initially welcoming data centers with tax benefits and other perks, communities are now questioning their impact on the local economy and their own energy bills. This bifurcation of the workforce, in which highly skilled professionals benefit from the use of AI while entry-level workers are left out, is contributing to what economists have called the “Kshaped economy.” Instead of lifting all boats, AI is contributing to and exacerbating the separation of economic and lifestyle winners and losers. When faced with these challenges, there is a temptation to throw up our hands in a defeatist resignation to what is. However, as engineers and technologists in the business of building reliable and equitable ecosystems for electronics that power AI, we have a responsibility to both ourselves and society. We should not minimize the impact that we can have. From a technologist’s perspective, a positive response to AI begins with a commitment to human-centered design. We should not treat AI as an end in itself, but as a tool to expand dignity, agency, and opportunity for all. This means deliberately building systems that augment rather than replace human capabilities, especially for vulnerable or marginalized populations. At a practical level, this includes investing in tools to make AI accessible, providing user control, and ensuring that benefits are not captured only by those with capital or technical expertise. Technologists play a role in shaping societal outcomes. This can translate into advocating for reskilling initiatives, supporting policies that distribute AI’s gains more equitably, and choosing to work on applications that address pressing human needs such as healthcare, education, and climate resilience. We should work to ensure AI systems reflect shared human values, not just technical optimization. Ultimately, we have a responsibility to build AI systems that widen human flourishing, reduce harm, and ensure that the benefits of this transformative technology are broadly shared rather than narrowly concentrated.

Embracing Change: Turning Discomfort into Opportunity Change is uncomfortable. Even when we know it is necessary, it often challenges our routines, our confidence, and sometimes even our sense of stability. Yet if we pause and reflect honestly, we realize that change is not an occasional disruption —it is something we face every single day. Whether in our professional roles, our organizations, or our personal engagements, change is constant. The real question is not whether change will happen, but how we choose to respond to it. Fear and discomfort can easily become barriers. They can prevent us from remaining open-minded, from exploring new opportunities, and from recognizing possibilities hidden within difficult situations. Too often, uncertainty causes us to focus on what might be lost instead of what could be gained. Over the years, ESDA has evolved significantly. We have expanded our technical reach, strengthened global engagement, modernized our educational offerings, and adapted to the rapidly changing needs of the electronics and semiconductor industries. None of this growth happened without challenge. Every advancement required people willing to rethink old approaches, embrace new ideas, and move forward despite uncertainty. Today, our industry faces unprecedented pressures and transformation. Technology cycles move faster than ever. Workforce expectations are shifting. Economic pressures affect travel, participation, and training budgets. The way companies support employees who volunteer in professional organizations has also changed dramatically. Many of our volunteers face increasing obstacles: Limited travel budgets Reduced time away from daily responsibilities Increased scrutiny over the value of participation Growing pressure to balance volunteer contributions with demanding workloads At the same time, the nature of professional meetings and collaboration continues to evolve. We have seen the importance of returning to face-to-face engagement because true collaboration often happens when people are together in the same room—sharing ideas, challenging concepts, reading reactions, and building trust through direct interaction. Technical discussions, brainstorming, standards development, and problemsolving benefit tremendously from the energy and “brain trust” that comes from in-person participation. While virtual tools helped maintain continuity during times of necessity, they cannot fully replace the value of human connection, spontaneous conversation, mentorship, and the deeper learning that occurs when professionals actively engage, interact, and think together.

Companies evaluate every expense carefully. Volunteers often make personal sacrifices to contribute their expertise, support standards development, mentor others, and strengthen the community. These realities are not unique to ESDA—they reflect broader changes occurring across many industries and professional organizations. And yet, despite these challenges, there is reason for optimism. Throughout our history, ESDA has succeeded because of people who were willing to adapt. Individuals who understood that growth requires discomfort. Leaders and volunteers who recognized that preserving our mission does not mean preserving every process exactly as it once was. Change does not mean abandoning our values. It means finding new ways to uphold them. The opportunity before us is not simply to survive change, but to capitalize on it: To create more flexible ways for members to engage To make technical collaboration more accessible globally To attract the next generation of volunteers and leaders To demonstrate the continuing value of professional involvement to employers and industry partners To strengthen our relevance in a rapidly evolving technical landscape Every challenge contains the potential for innovation if we are willing to look beyond the discomfort. As professionals, volunteers, and leaders, we must continue asking ourselves: How do we remain open to possibility? How do we encourage adaptability instead of resistance? How do we ensure that fear of change does not prevent progress? The future of ESDA—and of our industry—will not be shaped by those who avoid change. It will be shaped by those willing to engage with it thoughtfully, courageously, and collaboratively. Change is hard. But so is standing still while the world moves forward. The good news is that we do not face these challenges alone. Together, through shared commitment, technical excellence, and community, we can continue transforming obstacles into opportunities and ensure that ESDA remains strong, relevant, and impactful for years to come.

The meetings demonstrated continued momentum across multiple working groups, with several key documents progressing toward publication, new technical topics emerging, and collaboration increasing across standards activities. Advancing Core ESD Control Standards A major focus of the June meetings was the continued revision of ANSI/ESD S20.20, the industry's cornerstone ESD Control Program Standard. Working Group 20 reviewed and adjudicated the majority of submitted comments during the ongoing five-year review process. Discussions included potential additions related to insulator measurements and future consideration of a scope adjustment toward Charged Device Model (CDM) risk management. The working group remains on track for TAS review later this year. Working Group 53 continued its extensive revision of ESD TR53, which is being updated to strengthen guidance on compliance verification and improve harmonization with IEC 61340-5-4. Significant progress was made on grounding and bonding terminology, test equipment requirements, resistance measurement practices, packaging verification guidance, and procedures for addressing non-compliant ESD control items identified during audits. Significant Progress in Personnel Grounding and ESD Control Products Several working groups responsible for personnel grounding and ESD protective products reported important advancements. Working Group 1 (Wrist Straps) continued updates to ANSI/ESD S1.1, including the addition of verification procedures for resistance meters and test fixtures. The group also worked toward adding figures and guidance for two-wire wrist-strap systems while evaluating where future continuous-monitor guidance should reside.

Working Group 15 (Gloves) completed adjudication of all critical STDCOM comments for ANSI/ESD STM15.1, positioning the document to move forward toward Industry Review. Working Group 97 (Footwear/Flooring Systems) completed adjudication of STDCOM comments on ANSI/ESD STM97.2, moving the document toward recirculation voting while continuing discussions on reporting methods and interpretation of walking voltage test data. Device Testing and Qualification Efforts Continue to Expand The Joint Human Body Model (HBM) Working Group continued preparation for the next revision of ANSI/ESDA/JEDEC JS-001. Discussions focused on clarifying testing approaches for non-supply pins, associated supply requirements, and future guidance for increasingly complex semiconductor devices, including chiplet-based architectures and multi-chip modules. The Joint Charged Device Model (CDM) Working Group reported substantial progress across multiple projects. Round-robin testing programs for the CC-TLP and LI-CCDM methodologies continue to generate valuable data to support future standards development. The group also completed adjudication of nearly 200 comments on ESD TR5.3.1, which has now advanced to TAS review. In addition, the working group reviewed potential future updates to JS-002 and JTR002 and continued collaboration with automotive industry organizations to improve harmonization of ESD qualification requirements. Expanding Technical Reports and Emerging Topics Working Group 4 continued developing a new Technical Report on conveyor systems. The group reviewed figures, testing approaches, and document organization while refining guidance for evaluating ESD risks associated with various conveyor technologies used in electronics manufacturing. The document is approaching final working group review. June Meeting Summary Working Group 2 (Garments) expanded discussions beyond the ongoing revision of ANSI/ESD STM2.1 to include emerging topics such as buried-conductor garments and dual-conductor garment systems. Members reviewed available industry studies and agreed to gather additional technical information before continuing discussions later this year.

Working Group 13 (Hand Tools) continued the revision of ANSI/ESD S13.1 and completed adjudication of most of the working group's comments. Once the standard revision is complete, the group will shift its focus to developing a new technical report and future guidance on battery-powered tools. High Reliability and Process Assessment Activities Gain Momentum Working Group 19 (High Reliability) continued development of its new standards project focused on highreliability applications. Notably, the group reviewed an AI-assisted organizational structure for draft requirements. While members ultimately chose to maintain alignment with the structure of ANSI/ESD S20.20, the discussion highlighted growing interest in the appropriate use of artificial intelligence as a support tool during standards development. Working Group 17 (Process Assessment) began planning future revisions to ANSI/ESD SP17.1 and identified several emerging topics, including new approaches for assessing CDM and Charged Board Event (CBE) risks, as well as evaluating risks associated with ESD-compliant packaging. Development of additional technical reports and process assessment guidance continues. Packaging and Materials Standards Continue Forward Working Group 11 (Packaging) advanced several important projects, including continued work on ANSI/ESD STM11.13 and ANSI/ESD STM11.31. The group also continued investigating triboelectrification testing methods and concentric ring electrode studies, with plans to develop additional correlation testing and validation activities. These efforts aim to improve consistency and confidence in packaging material evaluations throughout the industry. Working Group 5.0 (Device Testing) completed its review of critical comments on ANSI/ESD SP5.0 and continued development of a new Curve Tracing Technical Report to provide additional guidance for device characterization activities. Working Group 5.4 (Transmission Line Upset) formally re-engaged following a period of limited activity. Numerous documents moved closer to publication, several new technical initiatives gained momentum, and working groups continued addressing emerging challenges facing the electronics industry. As ESD technologies, manufacturing processes, and device architectures continue to evolve, the Association's volunteer experts remain committed to ensuring that standards keep pace with industry needs while maintaining the technical rigor and practical applicability that users worldwide have come to expect. The EOS/ESD Association extends its appreciation to all volunteers, working group members, technical contributors, and industry partners whose dedication continues to advance ESD control and device qualification practices across the global electronics community. Manufacturing Task Team Focuses on Consistency and Harmonization The Manufacturing Task Team remained highly active, reviewing and updating common boilerplate language used across numerous ESD standards. Discussions focused on specimen support surfaces, metal plate definitions, resistance measurement procedures, terminal terminology, environmental conditioning requirements, and reporting practices. The team also continued its broader mission of improving consistency across all ESD control standards by aligning terminology, measurement practices, and procedural language. The users of this information need to determine the suitability Answer Question THRESHOLD™ JULY/AUGUST 2026 Does the ESDA have a standard on testing a buildings/facilities main earth ground rod; or is this standard held by another organization? (if so which one?) Our standard ANSI/ESD S6.1 provides guidance of testing the grounding and bonding within a facility to the building electrical system main ground at the electrical service entrance. We do not go beyond the main service panel. The design and testing of the building ground system is the purview of NFPA 70, the US National Electric Code but finding the procedure or standard for testing of the facility ground is hard to find. If you look at NFPA 780 - the Lightning Protection Code, you will see some guidance on the ground system. The testing of the ground looks at voltage drop across electrodes spaced at various distances. Some instrument manufacturers make equipment to do that test. If you Google "testing of building ground" that will give you some links to look at for the actual ground tests. It seems that no one really wants to get into what the "GROUND" should be.
