EOS/ESD Association, Inc. has been granting awards for more than 35 years by recognizing those who have contributed to excellence in service and outstanding technical achievements in the fields of ESD applications and designs. These recipients include both individuals who have made significant impact to the industry and to EOS/ESD Association, Inc., and, in some cases, corporate organizations that have supported their employees' extensive volunteer participation. The awards are meant to not only recognize highly deserving individuals, but also to inspire others. Organization awards signify the value EOS/ESD Association, Inc. places on the important and critical work of all of our volunteers, recognizing excellence and teamwork.

Awards Committee

The purpose of the Awards Committee is to select candidates for the various EOS/ESD Association, Inc. Awards. The Awards Committee investigates potential nominees, secures biographical data, presents candidate names for the advice and consent of EXCOM during the Spring Meeting Series, and obtains the plaque for presentation at the Annual General Meeting.

Awards

  • Outstanding Contributions Award

    The Outstanding Contributions Award is the ESD Association’s most prestigious award. It is awarded to an individual who has made a major contribution to either the development or the operation of the ESD Association or has had a significant impact in the field of EOS/ESD. Potential candidates for the Outstanding Contributions Award are not required to be members of the ESD Association. The final selection is approved by EXCOM.

    • Mandatory Requirements
      • Must have been actively involved in ESD for greater than 5 years.
      • Served on:
        • TPC
        • Session Chair
        • Workshops
        • Standards or
        • Other Association Committee
      • Tutored, mentored or asked to be a consultant by others.
      • Is recognized for excellence by others.
      • Recognized for technical achievements in own area of ESD.
      • Consistent and continuous contributions.
    • Final Selection:
      • Initiated a new branch of ESD (new topics or fields of interests).
      • Pioneering work that led to other industry technology advances.

    The Awards Committee Chairperson and/or the President of EOS/ESD Association, Inc. will present the Outstanding Contributions Award.

    *Note: Recipients of the Outstanding Contributions Award also receive complimentary EOS/ESD Association, Inc. Lifetime Membership.

  • Founders Award

    The Founders Award is presented to a Member or former member of the ESD
    Association who was involved in the formation of the ESD Association or the EOS/ESD Symposium. The Founders award is presented at the Annual General Meeting.

  • Industry Pioneer Award

    The Industry Pioneer Award is presented to individuals who have made major
    contributions in the development of EOS/ESD theory, products, standards or other related fields of interest. The recipient of the Industry Pioneer Award does not have to be a member of the ESD Association.

  • Industry Contribution Award

    The Industry Contribution Award is presented to a company that has made significant contributions to the industry overall while supporting EOS/ESD Association, Inc.

  • Joel Weidendorf Memorial Award

    The EOS/ESD Association’s Joel P. Weidendorf Memorial Award is presented in
    recognition of significant contributions, service, leadership, and achievement in the field of EOS/ESD Standards development. The award recipient is chosen by the Standards Business Unit Manager with confirmation from the EOS/ESD Association Executive Director and Standards Management Team.


    Joel Weidendorf was the original Global ESD Control Program Manager for IBM
    Corporation beginning in the mid 1980’s. He assembled a global network to help IBM understand and deal with the early problems with electrostatics, especially in the disk drive sector. Joel started his involvement with the ESD Association in the later 1980’s and brought many of his ESD control program people with him. Many of whom became leaders in the ESDA. He was elected to the ESDA Board of Directors in 1991 and served 2 terms. His major contributions to the ESDA came when he was appointed Standards Committee Chair in 1987. His deep industry connections, personal guidance, individual mentorship, and vision for the future of ESD control led to extraordinary advances in the standardization of static control materials and processes. The memorial award in Joel’s name recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the development of the ESD Associations standards documents and related technology.

  • David F. Barber Memorial Award

    The EOS/ESD Association’s David F. Barber Memorial Award is presented in In
    recognition of dedication and meticulous attention to the myriad of details associated with the smooth running of a Symposium week activity...and a personal attachment and commitment that led to service above and beyond the call of duty... The recipient is chosen by the Events Director, Executive Director, and Symposium Management Team. 
     
    David Barber, Sr. was a Founding Member of the ESD Association during his time with the US Air Force Labs at Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome, NY. He was instrumental in the development, management, and operation of the early EOS/ESD Symposiums, the first held in 1979. He was a major contributor to the formation of the ESD Association in 1982, including much of the original constitution and by-laws of the organization. Later, David started his own company as a convention coordinator to help organizations conduct symposiums and trade shows, including the EOS/ESD Symposium for many years. The memorial award in his name recognizes an individual who has provided significant contributions to the successful operation of the EOS/ESD Symposium week

  • Ed Weggeland Memorial Recognition Award

    The Ed Weggeland Memorial Award is given in recognition of the exemplary dedication to EOS/ESD Association, Inc. through continuous support of programs, leadership in the various committees, and, above all, for making indelible contributions to the management of the organization. The recipient is chosen by the Executive Director.

    Ed was involved with ESDA standards development in its infancy and helped establish its current Standards Committee structure and ANSI accreditation. He was known for his attention to detail and meeting facilitation. His stature and his strong voice could seem intimidating at times; however, his smile and his famous bear hugs revealed his true nature. Ed’s goal for the Association was for ESDA to become globally recognized as a leader in the industry and maintain a high quality of service. One of his many mantras was to be good to the industry and the industry will be good to you. Ed served in various chair and officer positions. Including ESDA president. “Eddie” was a friend, colleague, mentor, and teacher to many ESDA volunteers. Nothing is as large as the impact he had on people who knew him and his love and exuberant passion for life, family and the ESD Association.

     

  • EOS/ESD Association, Inc. Presidents Award

    The EOS/ESD Association’s President’s Award is presented in recognition of significant contributions, leadership, and management that has enhanced our operations and effectiveness in serving industry and our organization. The recipient is chosen by the EOS/ESD Association President and confirmed by the EOS/ESD Association Executive Director.

  • Volunteer Merit Award — Volunteers Recognizing Volunteers

    The Volunteer Merit Award is to recognize the dedication, exemplary effort, and/or outstanding participation of an EOS/ESD Association, Inc. volunteer in regard to the development and promulgation of our organization’s activities and committee work with the nominations coming from volunteer peers.

  • EOS/ESD Symposium Paper Awards

    The EOS/ESD Symposium Outstanding Paper Award is presented to a person or persons to encourage a high degree of effort toward technical excellence in the writing and presentation of their paper. The award is voted on by EOS/ESD Symposium attendees based on originality, relevance to practice or further research, critical analysis of concepts, theories, and findings, and clarity of presentation. Awards are given in the manufacturing and device categories.

    The EOS/ESD Symposium Best Paper and Best Student Paper Awards are presented to a person or persons to encourage a high degree of effort toward technical excellence in the writing and presentation of their paper. Each subcommittee nominates a paper and student paper they believe has outstanding value in originality, relevance to practice or further research, critical analysis of concepts, theories, and findings, and clarity of presentation. Student papers are eligible for both nominations. Nominated papers are reviewed and voted on by a selected committee (TPC awards committee) led by the TPC chair and comprised of subcommittee chairs, vice general chair, and general chair.

    The EOS/ESD Symposium Best Paper and Best Student Paper Awards are presented to a person or persons to encourage a high degree of effort toward technical excellence in the writing and presentation of their paper. Each subcommittee nominates a paper and student paper they believe has outstanding value in originality, relevance to practice or further research, critical analysis of concepts, theories, and findings, and clarity of presentation. Student papers are eligible for both nominations. Nominated papers are reviewed and voted on by a selected committee (TPC awards committee) led by the TPC chair and comprised of subcommittee chairs, vice general chair, and general chair.
