Poster Presentation Information Page

A feature of the IEW will be invited and un-refereed poster sessions. Workshop attendees learn through interaction, while poster presentations provide the stimulus for lively discussion. The invited poster presentations were selected from abstracts submitted to the IEW that were deemed well suited to a poster presentation. Invited poster presentations will be included in the Workshop CD to be presented to all Workshop attendees.

The un-refereed poster session is an ideal place to present new ideas, challenge old ideas, and show work in progress, and the informal atmosphere of the IEW is the ideal setting for this format. To present an un-refereed poster paper, simply indicate on the registration form your intention of presenting a poster, or send an e-mail to the poster chair. Walk-on posters presenting last minute results will be welcome, but indicating the intent to present a poster paper in advance will help ensure a good location for your poster.

The poster guidelines shown below are the same for invited and un-refereed posters. The one restriction on all poster presentations is that there is to be no blatant commercial aspect to presentations. The decision on excessive commercial content will be made by the Poster Session Chair in consultation with the Technical Chair and Arrangements Chair.

Poster Preparation:

  • If you are presenting a poster, a display board will be reserved for you. Your work should be in landscape format on 8 1/2" x 11" or A4 paper with a maximum of 20 pages.
  • Your poster presentation must be self-explanatory and presented in such a way that other attendees, standing one to two meters from your poster, can clearly read and grasp the significance of your work and its central message in a few minutes.  Those attendees that are particularly interested will speak with you to develop further understanding

Mechanics

  • Your text should be 24 points or larger.  Headings should be 36 points or larger.
  • Use dark letters and figures on a white background.
  • Tables should be used sparingly and kept as simple as possible.  Data are almost always more efficiently displayed graphically.
  • A descriptive title should appear at the bottom of all graphs and tables. The axes of graphs should be clearly labeled in 24 point text and include units.
  • The use of color can be extremely effective in both making your poster stand out and in emphasizing your presentation’s most important points.  It is usually best to use just a few colors and is always best to be consistent in their use.
  • It is very important to sequentially number the individual panes of your presentation to move the reader through you presentation in a logical manor.
  • It is often helpful to sequentially number your paper’s figures, tables and equations. This especially aids discussion of your paper with others.

Technical/Scientific Organization

  • It is important that those reading your poster understand the motivation of your work and follow your arguments.  You may (or may choose not to) begin your poster with an outline.  Whether you begin with an outline or not, the following sequence is usually effective:
  • Concisely define the problem you have addressed.  What motivated you to conduct this work?  Why is it important for the reader to learn what you have to say?
  • Provide the readers with a concise review of the most pertinent background literature.  (Put your work in context.)
  • Present the main body of your study, your measurements, your calculations, etc.
  • Summarize your most important findings.
  • State your conclusion(s).
  • Make the appropriate acknowledgements.
  • Do not include Logos or names of your employer or university on any of the panels, except for the title chart.
